Octavio Antonio left Barksdale Air Force Base with championship gold after defeating Mehul “The Mongoose” Somaroutu by unanimous decision at AKA 55: Flags, Fights & Freedom.
The five-round amateur flyweight championship bout brought together two experienced and battle-tested competitors. Somaroutu entered the matchup with an amateur record of 4-4, while Antonio arrived at 5-1 with an opportunity to add an AKA championship to his growing résumé.
Somaroutu found success during portions of the early action, presenting Antonio with a composed and technically capable opponent. Antonio remained patient, maintained his pace, and continued working throughout the championship rounds.
After five rounds, all three judges awarded the fight to Antonio. The unanimous-decision victory improved his amateur MMA record to 6-1 and extended his winning streak to two.
Antonio’s victory was especially meaningful because it came in front of a packed aircraft hangar at Barksdale Air Force Base on Independence Day. The setting placed one of AKA’s most important amateur championships in front of military personnel, families, and fight fans from across the region.
The result established Antonio as the new AKA Amateur Flyweight Champion and added another major accomplishment to a career that has already included victories by knockout, submission, and decision.
At 6-1, Antonio has demonstrated that he can win in every phase of a fight. His ability to remain composed across five championship rounds may be his strongest statement yet.
